If you’ve spent hours wandering the Fae Realms wondering why you can’t trigger that highly talked-about quest line everyone’s posting about online, you’re far from alone. I blew through my first 8 hours of playtime rushing main story beats and skipping side content before I finally figured out how to start the Nightingale quest, and I made almost every possible mistake along the way. This guide breaks down every step you need to follow, hidden prerequisites the game never tells you about, and tricks to skip the frustrating trial and error I went through.
Prerequisites to Complete Before You Start the Nightingale Quest
The game does a terrible job of listing exactly what you need to unlock the quest, and most new players miss at least one of these requirements their first time looking for it. I showed up to the quest giver’s location three separate times before I realized I was underleveled and missing a key story item. You’ll need to tick all of these boxes before the quest becomes available:
- Minimum Player Level 12 (we recommend Level 14 if you plan to run the first quest segment immediately, as the first mobs you face are Level 13)
- Full completion of the "Wayfarer's First Call" main story arc, including the final boss fight against the Corrupted Bramble Warden
- Unlocked Refuge of the Fallen fast travel point, located on the eastern edge of the Sunken Thicket region
- At least 3 uncommon or higher-quality healing draughts in your personal inventory (they can’t be stored in your base chest to count)
You don’t have to finish any side quests to unlock the Nightingale quest, but we recommend doing a few of the Sunken Thicket collection quests first to stock up on healing items and extra XP. If you’re still struggling to hit Level 12, run the Bramble Patch repeatable quest three or four times, it only takes 10 minutes per run and gives 1200 XP each time.
How to Find the Quest Giver and Trigger the Opening Cutscene
Once you’ve checked all the prerequisites off your list, fast travel to the Refuge of the Fallen waypoint. Don’t head into the main camp like you might for other quests, turn west as soon as you spawn and walk for about two minutes until you see a small, overgrown cottage on the edge of the bramble patch. The quest giver, an older Fae woman named Elara, will be standing on the porch if you meet all the requirements. Elara only spawns between 6 PM and 3 AM in-game time, so if you show up during the day, you can either sleep at the nearby campfire to advance time or run a quick resource run while you wait for the sun to go down.
If you don’t see Elara at the cottage, double check that you don’t have any active bounties on your character. She refuses to speak to players with outstanding bounties, so you’ll need to turn those in at the Refuge bounty board before she’ll spawn. I spent an hour waiting for her once before I realized I’d forgotten to turn in a petty theft bounty I picked up by accident in the previous region.
Common Mistakes That Block the Quest From Starting
Even if you meet all the listed prerequisites, there are a few hidden issues that can stop the quest from triggering, and the game won’t give you any hints about what you’re doing wrong. The most common mistake I see new players make is skipping the loot chest after the Corrupted Bramble Warden boss fight. You must loot the "Fae Refuge Notice" letter from that chest to trigger Elara’s spawn, and if you leave the area before looting it, you’ll have to go back and re-run the boss fight to get it.
Another common issue is faction alignment. If you chose to side with the Shadow Collective during the Sunken Thicket faction quest, Elara will refuse to give you the Nightingale quest, as she’s a high-ranking member of the opposing Warden faction. You don’t have to fully switch sides to fix this, just complete three small neutral faction quests to reset your alignment to neutral, and she’ll speak to you again. A friend of mine had to do this when he first tried to unlock the quest, and it only took him 20 minutes to fix.
Finally, make sure you don’t have any active main story quests that require you to travel to a different region. The game will block new quest triggers if you have an outstanding main quest that takes place outside the Sunken Thicket, so wrap those up first before you head to Elara’s cottage.
What to Expect Right After You Accept the Quest
Once you talk to Elara and accept the first quest step, you’ll get a 10-minute timer to reach a hidden Fae portal on the other side of the bramble patch. A lot of new players waste time fighting the mobs that spawn along the path, but you don’t have to fight any of them if you don’t want to. You don't have to defeat all the spawned Shadow Stalkers to progress, just run straight for the portal marker and you’ll be fine. If your health drops too low, use the healing draughts you brought with you, you won’t need them for anything else in this first segment.
When you reach the portal, you’ll trigger a short cutscene that unlocks the full Nightingale quest line. The full line has 12 main quest segments and 4 optional side quests, and the rewards include exclusive light armor sets, a unique bow skin, and a permanent 5% movement speed buff that applies to all your characters on the same server. The first three segments take about two hours to complete, so make sure you have enough time set aside before you start if you want to knock out a big chunk of it right away.
At the end of the day, learning how to start the Nightingale quest is way less complicated than it seems once you know about the hidden prerequisites and small tricks to avoid common mistakes. Take five minutes to double check you’ve hit level 12, looted the Fae Refuge Notice, and have your healing draughts in your inventory before you head to Elara’s cottage, and you’ll unlock the quest line on your first try. If you run into any snags or can’t find a specific item, drop a note in the comments and I’ll help you work through it.
