How to Become a Nightingale: Practical Step-by-Step Guide for New Players

If you’ve spent your first few hours in Nightingale wandering lost through misty Fae realms, fighting off Bound monsters, and wondering how to move past the early game grind, you’re probably curious about how to become a nightingale, the titular role that unlocks all the game’s most exciting content. I’ve put 70+ hours into the game since launch, and fumbled through so many missteps before I unlocked the full Nightingale status, so this guide skips all the vague tutorial fluff and gives you exactly what you need to do. You don’t need perfect gear or a full squad to pull this off, either – solo players can hit this milestone just as easily as groups, as long as you follow the right steps.

Core Requirements to Qualify to Become a Nightingale

Before you can start the formal ritual to earn Nightingale status, you need to hit a few basic prerequisites that most new players don’t even know exist. None of these require rare drops or endgame gear, but they do require a little bit of planning so you don’t waste time backtracking later. I missed two of these requirements on my first playthrough, so I had to grind for three extra hours just to catch up.

Here’s the full list of non-negotiable requirements you need to complete first:

  • Realmwalker rank 10: You can grind this easily by clearing Bound camps, harvesting rare Fae resources, and turning in side quests for Bastion NPCs
  • 3 fully explored minor realms: You don't need to clear every enemy, but you do need to activate all waypoints and collect the realm's core Fae relic
  • Completed "Herald of the Bastion" quest line: This is the main story arc that starts right after you finish the prologue, and it walks you through the basics of realm traversal
  • 500 stockpiled Essence Dust: Don't waste this on low-tier crafting recipes early – save every bit you get from deconstructing unused gear and resource nodes
  • Green-quality Realm Transit Staff: You can unlock the recipe from the Bastion blacksmith once you hit rank 8, and it only costs 20 iron ingots and 30 woven fiber to make

I made the mistake of blowing 300 Essence Dust on a fancy base skin my first playthrough, and I had to spend two extra hours grinding deconstructing gear just to get enough for the ritual. Don't do that. Save every bit of Essence Dust you get until you unlock Nightingale status, you can splurge on cosmetics later.

Complete the "Vow of the Nightingale" Ritual Quest

Once you meet all the requirements, the Elder in the central Bastion plaza will have a new exclamation mark over her head, and she’ll give you the Vow of the Nightingale quest for free. This quest is far simpler than it sounds at first, even if the in-game description makes it sound like a high-stakes endgame task.

The quest asks you to travel to three specific pre-set Fae realms, and collect a sacred Nightingale feather from a statue in each one. Each statue is guarded by a low-level Fae mini-boss, but you don’t have to fight it if you don’t want to. The mini-bosses guarding the statues only have about 1200 HP each, so if you're playing with a group, you can take them down in less than a minute. But if you're solo and only have basic gear, stealth potions are completely viable for this step, and they let you walk right past the bosses without aggroing them. I've done both routes, and neither one is better – it just depends on your playstyle.

Once you collect all three feathers, head back to the Bastion and turn the quest in to the Elder. She’ll perform a short cutscene ritual, and you’ll officially unlock Nightingale status right after it ends.

Unlock and Master Nightingale Exclusive Abilities

Earning Nightingale status isn’t just a fancy title – it gives you access to three exclusive abilities that completely change how you play the game. None of these abilities are paywalled, and you can upgrade all of them by completing simple side quests from the new Nightingale faction NPCs that unlock after you finish the ritual.

The first ability is short-range flight using your Realm Transit Staff, which lets you glide and jump over large gaps, mountains, and groups of enemies without fighting them. The flight ability is a game-changer, especially when you're exploring large mountain realms that take forever to walk across. At first it only lasts 10 seconds, but upgrading your flight ability should be your first priority after unlocking Nightingale status – after 10 faction quests, you can extend it to 30 seconds with a 30 second cooldown.

You’ll also unlock the ability to trade with friendly Fae NPCs that spawn in higher tier realms, who sell exclusive crafting recipes and rare building materials you can’t get anywhere else. The third perk is access to Nightingale-only cosmetic skins for your gear, weapons, and base building parts, if you care about customizing your playstyle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Working Toward Nightingale Status

I’ve seen dozens of new players waste hours of time making avoidable mistakes when they’re working toward this milestone, and most of these mistakes come from not reading the fine print of the requirement list. A little bit of foresight can save you a ton of frustration later.

The biggest mistake is skipping side quests to grind enemy camps for rank XP. Side quests give 3x more Realmwalker XP per hour than grinding enemy camps, and most of them only take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. You’ll hit rank 10 far faster if you knock out side quests as you unlock them, instead of running around killing Bound for hours.

Another common mistake I see new players make is ignoring the waypoints in minor realms. You need to activate all three waypoints in each of the three minor realms to count as fully exploring them, so don't just run in, grab the core relic, and leave. Take an extra two minutes to find and activate the waypoints, it saves you from having to come back later. Don’t rush through the process just to unlock the title faster – take the time to collect extra resources along the way, and you’ll be set up for endgame content right after you unlock Nightingale status.

Unlocking the full Nightingale role completely changes how you interact with the game's world, and it opens up dozens of hours of endgame content you can't access any other way. You don't need to be a pro player or spend real money to hit this milestone, either – all it takes is a little planning and a few hours of focused play. Whether you're playing solo or with friends, taking the time to learn how to become a nightingale is one of the most rewarding things you can do in your first week of the game. If you hit any snags along the way, don't be afraid to take a break and grind a few extra side quests for resources or XP, it'll make the final steps far less frustrating.
